MAP Hockey is excited to welcome Jon Jonasson as an advisor. With over 15 years of coaching experience at the Junior A level and 7 years as an advisor, Jon brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for helping athletes reach the next step in their hockey journey. His extensive coaching background and strong network make him a valuable addition to the MAP family.
A native of Bloomington, MN, Jon played three years of varsity hockey at Bloomington Kennedy High School. After high school, he competed in the MNJHL for three seasons with the Twin Cities Northern Lights and Minnesota Owls. He also had a brief stint at the minor professional level with the Evansville Icemen of the AAHL in 2009 before transitioning to coaching.
Jon’s coaching journey began in 2010-2011 as an Associate Coach for the Phoenix Polar Bears (WSHL), helping lead the team to a Western Division Championship appearance. In 2011-2012, he served as Director of Recruiting for the Cheyenne Stampede during their inaugural season, playing a key role in their early success. That same year, Jon coached a Bantam AA team in Minnesota’s most competitive district, guiding Chaska/Chanhassen to a .750 record and a trip to the VFW Championship.
He later returned to Junior hockey, helping build the Steele County Blades (MNJHL) from the ground up. During his tenure, multiple players advanced to NCAA and NAHL programs.
From 2014–2016, Jon served as Head Coach and GM of the Helena Bighorns (NA3HL), posting an impressive .800 winning percentage. In his first season, he led Helena to a Frontier Division Championship and narrowly missed a Silver Cup berth. In 2016–2017, he took the helm of the Breezy Point North Stars, leading them to their most successful season in franchise history in both wins and player advancement.
Between 2017–2023, Jon was the Head Coach and GM of the Minnesota Moose (USPHL). Under his leadership, the Moose became a national powerhouse in Tier 3 hockey, leading in player advancements to the NAHL, NCAA Division I & III, and ACHA Division I, with a remarkable record of 159-30-6.
In 2023–2024, Jon served as Assistant Coach for the Janesville Jets (NAHL), helping guide them to a third-place finish and the second-most NCAA commitments in the league. As a scout, Jon helped build some of the most successful Jets teams in history, including the 2014–2015 squad that set league records for wins (49), points (100), and fewest goals against (114). Since joining their staff, the Jets have secured 50+ NCAA commitments, two divisional titles, and two Robertson Cup appearances.
Throughout his career, Jon has helped move 150+ players to the next level—including the USHL, NAHL, NCAA Division I & III, and ACHA Division I—both as a coach and advisor.
Jon lives in Andover, MN with his wife Kellie, daughters Skylar (12) and Charley (10), and their family dog Marley.
